Insects versus Birds : Strategies insects use to avoid being eaten by birds.

Joseph Sheldon attended high school in St. Helens, Oregon and earned his bachelor’s of science in biology at the College of Idaho. He was awarded a Ph.D. in entomology: insect ecology at the University of Illinois and spent 36 years teaching at Eastern College and Messiah College (both now universities in Pennsylvania). From 1987 to 2007, he was a member of the summer teaching faculty of Au Sable Institute of Environmental Science.

Sheldon has received numerous awards during his career, including Conservation Educator of the Year in the classroom category for the state of Pennsylvania in 1998.

He served as president of the American Entomological Society from 1991 to1997; president of the American Scientific Affiliation from 1998 to1999. He is a founding board member of the Evangelical Environmental Network, serving as chairman of the Academic Committee of the Creation Care Study Program from 2004 to 2007.

Sheldon is the author of numerous articles on insect ecology; science/religion focusing on stewardship of Creation; and two books: Rediscovery of Creation: A Bibliographical Study of the Church’s Response to the Environmental Crisis, 1992, the American Theological Library Association ATLA Bibliography Series, No. 29 and; Redeeming Creation: The Biblical Basis for Environmental Stewardship, 1996, Inter Varsity Press, coauthored with Van Dyke, Mahan, and Brand.

He and his wife, Donna (Zielaskowski) Sheldon, retired to Whidbey Island in June 2007. Where he became founding board vice chair of Pacific Rim Institute for Environmental Stewardship (2009-2015). He has been board Secretary for Whidbey Island Theological Studies (WITS) since 2014 and a board member of Whidbey Audubon Society since 2016.
