Insects versus Birds : Strategies insects use to avoid being eaten by birds.

Whidbey Audubon Society’s General Meeting program is presented by Entomologist Joseph Sheldon. The relationship between birds and their insect prey has been and continues to be a source of amazement and study by both naturalists and scientists alike. The bizarre appearance of many insects can only be explained by considering their role and effectiveness in avoiding bird predators.

Joe explains, “My personal involvement and formal study of insect antipredation strategies began more than 50 years ago as a graduate student in the University of Illinois’ Department of Entomology. It resulted in a ground-breaking publication in the journal Evolution that overturned the foundational assumptions of insect mimicry.”

This presentation will examine that story and will overview the various strategies utilized by insects to avoid bird predation. Come, enjoy, and be amazed!

Joe attended high school in Saint Helens, Oregon, received his bachelor of science degree at the College of Idaho in biology and his PhD at the University of Illinois in entomology, insect ecology. He retired to Whidbey Island in 2007 after a long and successful collegiate teaching career. Joe is well known locally for his wonderful all-day birding field trips.
