Program Meeting: Feathers and Fur: the Interwoven Lives of Birds and Mammals

  • Coupeville Recreation Hall 901 Northwest Alexander Street Coupeville, WA, 98239 United States (map)

Steve and Martha Ellis present the September program.

Steve and Martha Ellis present a unique program about the interaction of wildlife species. Birds and mammals are more than just pretty pictures in field guides that can be checked off and forgotten once you’ve seen them. They lead complicated lives that may include interacting with each other. These interactions have important consequences. For instance, what would happen to Red-tailed Hawks if there were no small rodents to catch? Where would flying squirrels find dens if woodpeckers didn’t create nest cavities in trees? These types of interactions happen countless times each day.

Relationships between birds and mammals come in many forms. We’ll describe these types and give examples for each. Some will be surprising and others you’ll find amusing. We’ll include some of our own observations with the hope you’ll be able to see examples on your next birding expedition.

This meeting is in-person, free and open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m. for socializing and refreshments. A short business meeting includes the Birdathon award to the team which raised the most amount of money. The program begins at 7:30 p.m.
