Birding in the Neighborhoods - South Report

By Cathi Bower

Early in the month, on the Deer Lagoon West dike, we identified over 40 species, and then later for the first day of spring, we mixed it up over at Sunlight Beach and the East Dike, with at least 35 species, including four Northern Harriers swooping together over the fields.  Four!  Two of each, male and female. Twenty herons were all standing together near the rookery—staging up for another season.

We’d quickly scanned the seaside and the bouncing waves and Surf Scoters, scaup, Buffleheads, Common Goldeneyes, Mallards, Brants, and gulls. Once the tide had gone out a bit, Dunlins flocked to the shallows, with so many dabblers on the lagoon. The Brants were up on their favorite sand spit to the west, and that leucistic Bald Eagle we’ve seen before was out there, too, with her mate and a younger eagle pecking at something on the beach near them.
